The distinction between vegetables and fruits may often seem clear-cut. However, all fruits do not have to be sweet and all vegetables need not be savoury.

In botanical terms, a fruit develops from the ovary of a flowering plant and contains seeds, while vegetables encompass other plant parts like roots, leaves, and stems.

1. Bell Peppers

Their culinary uses may disguise them as vegetables. However, bell peppers (capsicums) - red, green, or yellow - actually belong to the fruit family.

2. Pumpkin

It's filled with seeds, just like other fruits, and possesses a subtle sweetness derived from the plant itself. It can be used for savoury and dessert courses.

3. Brinjal

Slice open an eggplant (aubergine) and you'll find numerous tiny seeds in its flesh. It's a fruit belonging to the berry family, and not a vegetable.

4. Cucumber

With its high water content and crisp texture, cucumber is a refreshing ingredient that's botanically a fruit.

5. Tomato

Tomatoes grow from the flower's ovary, sheltering the plant's seeds within its juicy flesh. Does this make ketchup a type of fruit juice then? We can wonder.
