From dishes to countertops, kitchen sponges clean everything. But they can harbour germs if not cleaned properly. Try these 5 ways to keep sponges odourless and bacteria-free.

Kill germs with high heat. Dampen the sponge with water, and microwave it for 1-2 minutes to kill bacteria. Be careful when removing it, as it will be hot.

Dry the sponge, then soak it in a mixture of vinegar and water for 5-10 minutes. This will remove germs and odours, keeping your sponge fresh and clean.

Take 4-5 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Add the sponge to the water and boil for 5 minutes. This will kill bacteria and sanitize the sponge.

Rub the sponge with coarse salt and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing. Salt helps remove bacteria and odours while scrubbing the sponge's surface.

Soak the sponge in a bleach solution - 1 tbsp bleach in 1 cup water - for 5 minutes. This will disinfect it. Rinse thoroughly before using it.
