Drinking excess green tea increases acid in the stomach due to high caffeine content. More than three cups of green tea can cause certain side effects in the body.

1. Caffeine Overdose

Green tea contains caffeine, and so its excessive intake can lead to health problems such as headache, sleeping disorders, irritability, anxiety and heartburn.

Green tea has polyphenols known as tannins that increase stomach acid. This may lead to stomach ache, nausea, burning sensation or even constipation.

 

2. Can Upset Stomach

Green tea has catechins that boost metabolism and help reduce weight; however, excessive consumption can reduce iron absorption in the body. 

 

3. May Reduce Iron Absorption

Combining green tea with antibiotics, stimulants, asthma medications or any other drug can pose a risk of liver damage.

 

4. Can Affect Those on Medications

Green tea is a diuretic which makes the body lose water. Drinking excess green tea can cause frequent urination, which may lead to dehydration.

 

5. May Cause Dehydration

Excess consumption of green tea may increase the risk of bone disease such as osteoporosis in sensitive individuals.
