Tomato chutney is a popular accompaniment for South Indian dishes like idli, dosa, vada, etc. Its tangy flavour and bright reddish colour make it irresistible!

There are many versions of South Indian-style tomato chutney. Here's a tried-and-tested recipe with basic ingredients and just three steps:

1 cup grated coconut
1 onion
2 big tomatoes
1 green chilli
4 garlic cloves
2 whole dried red chillies
1 tbsp dalia
1 tsp salt

1 tbsp coconut oil
2 sprig curry leaves
¼ tsp mustard seeds
¼ tsp cumin seeds
1 whole dried red chilli, broken

Grate the fresh coconut. Roughly chop the onion and tomatoes. Keep all the other ingredients ready.

Grind together the tomatoes, onion, coconut, garlic, chillies, dalia, and salt to form a smooth paste. Transfer it to a bowl/container.

To prepare the tadka, heat oil and add curry leaves, mustard seeds, cumin seeds and dried red chilli. Once done, pour it over the tomato paste. Your chutney is ready!
