A ripe muskmelon will naturally detach from its stem, while one that has been cut off too soon will still have some of it attached.
Another way to check ripeness is by assessing the color. If it's beige or creamy yellowish in colour, it's a good sign of ripeness.
Another indicator of a ripe muskmelon is if it weighs heavy, as it is filled with juicy pulp. If it's too light, it may not be ripe.
If you hear a low sound while tapping the muskmelon, it's a ripe one. However, if the sound is hollow, it's not a good sign.

A ripe muskmelon should have a sweet and slightly musky aroma. If the smell is too sweet, it is most likely overripe.
