Using old spices? They may not only ruin the dish, but also lose all their intended punch. Here are some signs your spices might be stale and ineffective.

1. Faded Colour

Spices should be vibrant. If your turmeric looks pale or chilli powder seems dull, it's a sign their effectiveness has faded.

2. Weak Smell

Crush a small amount and sniff. Fresh spices should have a strong smell. A faint or no smell means the oils have likely evaporated.

3. Clumpy Texture

Humidity can ruin the spice. If your spices are clumped together or feel moist, throw them away. They probably absorbed too much moisture.

4. No Flavour

Take a small amount of spice and taste it. If it doesn't evoke a taste in your mouth, it is most likely expired and shouldn't be used in dishes.

5. Stored For Long

Most ground spices last for 1-2 years. Whole spices like cloves or peppercorns may last for 4. If yours is older than that, toss them away immediately.
