Want a light and comforting dal recipe for your next meal? Kerala-style Parippu Curry is a lip-smacking option featuring yellow moong.

This wholesome treat is made using just a few basic ingredients but turns out quite flavourful. Parippu curry can be paired with rice, appams, parotta and more.

1 cup yellow moong
1/2 cup grated coconut
2-3 green chillies
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
4 shallots/small onions
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp salt, or to taste

2 tbsp coconut oil or ghee
1 sprig of curry leaves
2 whole dried red chillies
ΒΌ tsp mustard seeds
4 shallots/small onions

Dry roast the moong dal on low flame in a cooker. Stir continuously for around 5 minutes or until it turns aromatic. This roasting step is optional.

Add 2 cups of water and turmeric powder to the dal in the pressure cooker. Cook for 3 whistles. Later, open the vessel and mash the cooked dal.

Grind the coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies and 4 shallots to form a coarse paste. Add the paste to the cooked dal.

Adjust the consistency of the parippu curry by adding water as required. Stir and cook on low heat for around 5 minutes.

Prepare a tadka (tempering) by adding curry leaves, mustard seeds, red chillies and shallots to heated oil/ghee. Once done, pour it over the curry and serve.
