This chana dal pulao recipe is super simple and perfect for days when you want something light but filling.

Made with gram dal, rice, and mild spices, it is a great option for an easy summer lunch that tastes delicious and comes together quickly.

300 grams rice
1 cup chana dal, soaked
1 large onion, sliced
2 tomatoes, pureed
2 green chillies
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 bay leaf

2 black cardamoms
2 green cardamoms
8-9 black peppercorns
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp coriander powder
Salt to taste

Soak chana dal for about 2 hours. This helps soften the dal and makes it easier to cook, especially for quick pulao recipes like this.

Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add the whole spices. Let them sizzle for a couple of minutes, then toss in the onions and cook until they turn light golden.

Add ginger garlic paste and give it a good stir. Mix in the tomato puree, coriander powder, and turmeric. Cook everything down until it smells amazing.

Add the soaked dal and rice. Mix them well with the masala so everything is coated. Pour in two glasses of water and close the lid.

Let it cook for two whistles, then turn off the heat. Let the pressure drop naturally before opening the lid.
