Chana dal is a warm and comforting dal that's packed with flavourful spices. Pair it with hot roti or rice and you're good to go. Here's how to make it just like in Punjabi homes.

1 cup chana dal, soaked
2.5 cups water
1 large onion
2 tomatoes
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp grated ginger
1-2 garlic cloves
1 green chilli

½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
1 tsp garam masala
A pinch of hing
1 tbsp ghee
Salt
Coriander leaves

Add the soaked chana dal, water, turmeric, and salt to a pressure cooker. Cook for 5-6 whistles or until the dal is soft. Let the pressure release naturally.

Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add hing, ginger, garlic, and green chilli to the pan. Saute for a minute on medium flame.

In the same pan, add chopped onions and saute until brown. Then add tomatoes, chilli powder, and coriander powder. Cook until oil separates.

Add the cooked chana dal to the masala. Mix well and simmer for 5-7 mins. Add water and spices as desired, mix and let it cook for a couple of mins.

Sprinkle garam masala on top of it and garnish with coriander leaves. Transfer it to a bowl and enjoy this comforting dal on chilly nights!
