Dabeli is a street-style snack that is said to have originated in the Kutch region of Gujarat. It is also popular in many parts of Maharashtra.

This street food is known for its sweet and spicy filling of potatoes and peanuts enhanced with a special dabeli masala (a fragrant spice mix).

If you want to prepare dabeli at home, the following recipe is easy and delicious. In the end, we have also provided a separate recipe for making dabeli masala from scratch.

3 boiled potatoes, mashed
2 tbsp roasted peanuts
3 tbsp oil
4 tbsp dabeli masala
1 tsp chilli powder
¼ tsp each: asafoetida & turmeric powder
½ tsp chaat masala

1 tsp salt
3 tbsp tamarind chutney
2 tbsp finely chopped onion
Chopped coriander leaves and Pomegranate seeds for garnish
Sev for topping

In a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil and add the roasted peanuts, turmeric powder, chilli powder and 1 tbsp dabeli masala. Saute for a minute on low flame. Transfer into a bowl.

In the same pan, add 2 tbsp oil, asafoetida, 2 tbsp dabeli masala and the mashed potatoes, and 1 tbsp tamarind chutney. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes.

Transfer this potato filling mixture into a large bowl and top with 1 tbsp each of chopped onion, pomegranate seeds, roasted peanut mixture and sev. Set aside.

Slit the pav. Start by adding tamarind chutney inside, followed by a heap of the prepared potato stuffing. Garnish again with peanuts, onions, pomegranate seeds and sev.

Heat butter on a tawa on a low flame and roast the stuffed pav on both sides for around a minute until lightly browned. Top the dabeli with more sev and enjoy!
