How To Make Punjabi Dal Tadka

Ingredients For Dal:

1/2 Cup chana dal,1/2 cup toor dal, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder,1/2 tsp salt, 1 cup water

For Gravy:

2 tbsp oil, 1 tsp cumin,1 tsp ginger-garlic paste, 1 onion,1 tomato, 1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp coriander powder, 1/2 tsp garam masala, 1 green chilli, 1/2 cup dal water

Ingredients For Tadka:

2 tbsp oil,1/2 tsp cumin seeds,1 tsp garlic, chopped, 2 red whole chillies, 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, 2 tbsp coriander leaves

Step-1

Soak the chana dal for 2 hours. Do the same for the toor dal. Once soaked, toss both into a pressure cooker with salt, turmeric powder, & water.

Step-2

Pressure cook the dals for about 5-8 minutes, or until you hear 3-4 whistles, making sure the dals are fully cooked.

Prepare Gravy: Step 3

Heat oil in a pan & add cumin seeds. Once they start crackling, throw in the ginger-garlic paste. Mix it up, add the onion, & cook until it turns golden.

Step-4

Add the tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes. Then, toss in the salt, coriander powder, garam masala, and green chilli. Let this mixture cook for a bit.

Step-5

Add the dal water from when you boiled the dals, along with kasoori methi. Pour the cooked dal into this onion-tomato gravy and let it simmer. Add water if needed.

Prepare Tadka: Step 6

In another pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds. Once they crackle, add the garlic, red chillies, and ginger. Cook for a few seconds.

Step-7

Mix in the red chilli powder and coriander leaves. Pour this tadka over the cooked dal, and it's ready to be paired with roti, naan, or rice.
