Makar Sankranti is a festival of warmth, gratitude, and traditional flavours shared with family. Urad Dal Khichdi is a comforting festive dish that combines nutrition, simplicity, and devotion in every bite.

1 cup whole urad dal (soaked for 3–4 hours)
½ cup rice
2 tablespoons ghee
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste
4 cups water
Optional: black pepper or ginger for mild flavour

Wash the soaked urad dal and rice thoroughly. Drain the water and keep them aside to ensure a clean and smooth texture while cooking.
In a pressure cooker or deep pan, heat ghee on a low flame. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle gently, releasing their aroma.

Choose dishes that can be cooked quickly. Opt for recipes that are simple and require fewer techniques and save time in the kitchen.

Add the washed urad dal and rice into the cooker. Mix everything well so the grains are coated with ghee and spices.
Pour in water and add salt as per taste. Close the lid and cook until the dal and rice become soft and creamy.

Once cooked, gently mash the khichdi for a smooth consistency. Serve hot with extra ghee on top, making it perfect for Makar Sankranti celebrations.
