Rotten potatoes can be harmful and should never be consumed. Knowing how to spot them early can help save your meals and health. Here are six quick tips to know:

Fresh, raw potatoes have an earthy aroma. If they give out a mouldy, sour or ammonia-like odour, they must be rotting and should be thrown away immediately.

Gently press the potato. If it feels too soft, mushy, or even oozes out liquid, it means it's spoiled. Good potatoes should be from the touch.

If the potatoes have a lot of wrinkles, they have the most moisture and nutrients. This means they are past their prime and should be thrown away quickly.

Before cooking, check the potatoes for mould, black spots, or unusual discolouration. If the surface has large areas of spoilage, it's best to throw it away.

Sprouts mean the vegetable is ageing. A few tiny ones can be removed, but if the potato has a lot of sprouts, it is unfit for cooking.
