About Moong Dal Payasam

Payasam is a classic rice and milk pudding from Kerala. This recipe is a variation of payasam, made with moong dal, nuts, cinnamon, cardamom, coconut milk and jaggery.

Ingredients

200 gm Moong Dal
½ cup Milk
½ cup Coconut Milk
2½ tbsp Jaggery Powder
4 Cardamom Pods
4 Cinnamon Sticks

3-4 Cashewnuts
½ tsp Cardamom Powder
4 Almonds
4-5 Raisins

Step 1

Soak moong dal in water for 30 minutes.

Step 2

Heat ghee in a pan. Saute cardamom and cinnamon for about a minute.

Step 3

Drain the dal and add it to the pan. Mix well.

Step 4

Add water and cook till dal turns soft. Grind the dal to make a thick paste.

Step 5

Heat ghee in a pan and pour the dal paste. Add cardamom powder and jaggery powder.

Add coconut milk. Cook for 5-10 minutes.

Serve with chopped cashews, almonds and raisins.
