An easy sambar if you may call it, the Shevga Dal masala is enhanced with a sizzling tadka of ghee and curry leaves. Ingredients of Shevga Dal Masala (Maharastrian Dal)

  • 1 Cup Urad dal
  • 2 Medium-sized drumsticks cut into 5cm pieces
  • 1 medium Onion chopped
  • 10-15 Curry Leaves
  • 2 tbsp Ghee
  • 2 Green chilies chopped
  • 1 tbsp Chopped ginger-garlic
  • 1 medium Tomato chopped
  • 1 tsp Jeera
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Haldi
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • A pinch of Kasuri methi
  • Salt according to taste

How to Make Shevga Dal Masala (Maharastrian Dal)

Wash the dal properly and soak for some time (preferable an hour).

In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, drumstick pieces, onion, ginger garlic, chili, and a couple of curry leaves. Pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles.

Let the pressure release naturally; now add a pinch of Kasuri methi to the dal.

In a pan heat ghee, once hot add asafoetida, mustard seeds, cumin, and curry leaves. Heat for some seconds and make sure not to burn this.
5.
Add on top of the ghee and close the lid. Open the lid after a minute or 2 and serve hot.
