North-Style Safed Dal Recipe:This North Indian-style dish is delicious and wholesome. Urad dal is cooked in a flavorful tomato base in this semi-dry preparation. You can savour this safed dal with some hot rotis or parathas.

Ingredients of North-Style Safed Dal
- 1 Cup white urad dal
- 2 tomatoes, grated
- 4 Green Chillies
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp pepper powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1-inch ginger, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped
- Salt to taste
How to Make North-Style Safed Dal

Soak the dal for one hour and then boil it with 2 cups of water till dried, on low flame.

In a kadhai, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, ginger and half the quantity of green chillies. Saute on low flame.

Add the chilli powder, along with 1 and a half teaspoon salt. Immediately add the grated tomatoes. Keep stirring till the mixture leaves the oil.

Add the boiled dal and mix well for around 5 minutes.

Add the pepper powder, lime juice and chopped coriander. Lightly mix and turn off the heat.

Prepare a tadka (tempering) using ghee and the remaining green chillies. Pour it over the dal preparation and serve hot with rotis or parathas.
