A favorite during winters, this nutty snack is a must try. Chikkis are traditionally made and relished the most during the festival of Lohri. There are a variety of chikkis made with different nuts and ingredients, but peanuts is the common in all. Chikkis is known by different names in different regions and cultures. While in northern India, especially in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, it is 'Layiya Patti', in Sindhi regions of India, it is called 'Layee or Lai' and in Bangladesh, it is known to be 'Gur Badam'. Here is an easy and quick chikki recipe for you to prepare at home and store in an airtight jar to relish for long.

Ingredients of Dry Fruit Chikki

  • 100 gms peanuts
  • 100 gms cashew nuts
  • 100 gms walnuts
  • 50 gms almonds
  • 1 tbsp saunf
  • 350 gms sugar
  • 350 gms honey
  • 125 ml water
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp lemon rind, grated
  • 1 tsp soda bicarbonate

How to Make Dry Fruit Chikki

Mix nuts and saunf, warm them, but do not roast them.

Mix sugar, honey and water over moderate flame.
3.
Dissolve the sugar and bring to a boil.
4.
Cook till the syrup when, dropped into a jug full of water forms a hard brittle ball.

Stir in the nuts and saunf. Cook for five minutes.
6.
Remove from heat. Add lemon rind and baking soda. Stir well.
7.
Pour syrup into a well-oiled baking tin. Taking great care.
8.
Allow it to cool and then break into small pieces.
9.
When completely cold, store in an airtight container.
10.
While storing separate the layers with plastic paper.
