Candies and baked goods have been part of many bizarre albeit creative trends in the recent past, but the watermelon toast is by far the fruitiest of them all. What’s the wow factor? Well, it doesn’t taste like watermelon at all or any other fruit for that matter. This eye-catching confection from Taiwan has taken social media by a storm, racking up more than 6 million YouTube views, surpassing the likes of the cronut craze and even the rainbow layer cakes.

Come summer and it usually means indulging in watermelon for a refreshing feel. So Jimmy’s Bakery in Yilan County, Taiwan, decided to bring about an interesting twist to this summer favourite and reintroduce it like never before so that it would appeal to even the pickiest of eaters. They crafted loaves of bread to look like watermelon using strawberry extracts, powdered green tea and charcoal bamboo (yes that is edible). And you thought it was merely an aesthetic marvel!

As soon as you bite into these deceptive treats, you realise that it isn’t your typical summer treat. The little bakery bakes around 100 loaves or 1500 slices a day and still can’t keep up with the demand. Yes, they are selling like hot cakes! But you’re in for some luck as there are many DIY home recipes, in case you can’t catch the next flight to Taiwan.
