Have you ever spotted these tiny pink-coloured fruits in your local market and wondered what they are? Karonda - also called black currant and scientifically named as carissa carandas - is a traditional summer produce in India and belongs to the berry family. They are often confused with cranberries because of their shape and size. Karondas may not be used on a regular basis but are commonly used for making pickles, jams and preserves - a popular one being - karonde ka achaar.  

Do not go by its size, this super-fruit is known to have an association with the ancient Indian herbal system of medicine. It is rich in essential nutrients like vitamin C, B, iron and acts as a great antioxidant. Regular consumption of karonda fruit is beneficial for improving mental health. The presence of magnesium along with the vitamins and tryptophan helps to stimulate the production of the neurotransmitter- serotonin which works towards bettering overall mental well-being.
