Here's How You Could Manage Chronic Neck Pain
It's no secret that meditation can ward off depression, help you de-stress and work wonders for your mind, body and soul. And according to a new study, mediation could also work as an effective treatment for reducing chronic neck pain.
(Meditation can protect the brain) Chronic disorders are hard to tolerate and in the long run can induce depression. While medicines can only help subside the symptoms, they can't cure you from constant pain. Which is why patients with chronic neck pain frequently experience distress. (Meditation helps lower blood pressure) In a study published in the 'Journal of Pain', researchers compared the effects of meditation on pain, perceived stress and psychological well being. They hypothesised that an eight-week meditation programme would decrease pain more effectively than a standardised exercise programme and that pain relief will coincide with stress reduction.

For the study, 89 patients with chronic neck pain who showed increased perceived stress were randomised into meditation and exercise programme groups. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after eight weeks. Results showed that meditation training significantly reduced pain when compared to the exercise group and pain-related "bothersomeness" decreased more in the meditation group as well. No significant differences between meditation and exercise were found for pain during movement, pain disability, psychological scores and quality of life, which is consistent with the known benefits of exercise on pain-related outcomes. The authors concluded that meditation has unique benefits for producing pain relief and for coping with pain.
