A 24-year-old Chinese woman lost her life while live-streaming a Mukbang video. The term 'Mukbang' refers to a live-streamed video where the host consumes large quantities of food, often within a specified time frame as part of a challenge. Originating in South Korea, the trend has faced significant criticism for promoting overeating and the consumption of unhealthy food, which can lead to obesity and other health issues.

According to local portal Hankyung, the incident occurred on July 14 during Pan Xiaoting's live broadcast. An autopsy revealed severe deformation in her abdomen due to excessive eating, with undigested food found in her stomach. Reports indicate that Xiaoting spent over 10 hours a day eating, consuming more than 10kg of food per meal. This extreme Mukbang challenge had previously resulted in her hospitalization due to stomach bleeding. Despite this, Xiaoting continued her binge eating sessions on camera shortly after being discharged. It is also reported that she consumed "a variety of strange foods."

Xiaoting's parents strongly discouraged her from excessive food consumption. According to Creaders.net, they reprimanded her after she returned home late from a live broadcast, urging her to stop the non-stop eating sessions. "What's the point of making more money? Do you know how much harm this does to your body?" they asked. In response, Xiaoting reassured them, claiming she could "bear the risk."
Pan Xiaoting, who previously worked as a waitress, was inspired to pursue Mukbang after seeing her classmate Liu Qi earn a substantial income from it. As Xiaoting's follower count grew, she received numerous rewards and gifts from her audience through her live broadcasts.|
