And a restaurant in Japan just took this to a whole new level by breaking the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the most expensive sushi. What's The Most Expensive Sushi In the World?

As of 25 July 2023, the restaurant Sushi Kirimon in Osaka, Japan holds the Guinness record for the most expensive sushi in the world. According to the GWR website, the dish has been crafted using ingredients sourced from all over the country and prepared with the help of traditional methods. In doing so, the restaurant wished to celebrate Washoku. UNESCO explains this term as "traditional dietary cultures of the Japanese."

How Much Does The World's Most Expensive Sushi Cost?

The "Kiwami Omakase" course for one at Sushi Kirimon in Osaka costs 350,000 Japanese Yen. That is currently equivalent to more than 2 lakh Indian rupees and more than 2400 US Dollars. Before this, the record for the costliest sushi was set by chef Angelito Araneta Jr in 2010. The GWR website explains that her creation consisted of five nigiri pieces garnished with diamonds and wrapped in 24-karat gold leaf. At the time, this dish cost customers 91,800 Philippine Pesos (according to current conversion rates, that is equivalent to more than INR 1,35,000).

How Is The World's Most Expensive Sushi Made?

The "Kiwami Omakase" course at Sushi Kirimon consists of 20 carefully curated pieces of sushi and includes nigiri as well as sashimi. A wide variety of fishes and other seafood have been used to create this record-breaking sushi course: Pacific bluefin tuna, chum salmon, bigfin reef squid, Japanese tiger prawn, conger eel, sea urchins, hairy crab, and others. Whale meat from the North Atlantic Ocean is one of the few ingredients sourced from outside the country. According to the official website, a sprinkling of gold leaf is added after the pieces of sushi are assembled on the plate.
