Know Your Coffee Beans: What is the Difference Between Arabica and Robusta?

Highlights

The coffee revolution in the country has been underway for some time now leading to a change in our drinking habits. Your morning cup of coffee is more than just an energy boost. It's the first whiff that sets your tone for the day.
Coffee is not just limited to cappuccino, latte or espresso. There are many other variants of coffee that offer different tastes and aromas - a lot of it comes from the kind of beans you use. Arabica and Robust are the two most common types of coffee. The primary difference between these two coffee beans is the way they are grown. Arabica is grown all over the world but only at at higher altitudes, and is the basis for almost 70% of all coffee beverages. Based on where it is cultivated, the flavours differ. For example, Ethiopian Arabica beans are known for their smooth, easy flavour with a floral finish. However, overall, the Arabica has a sweeter taste as compared to other coffee beans that are a bit bitter in taste. On the other hand, Robusta is grown on much flatter plantations and has a much higher caffeine content (2.7%) as compared to Arabica. It has a stronger, harsher taste and a grainier overtone with a peanut like after taste. The caffeine content in Robusta is twice as much as Arabica beans, and they are generally considered to be of inferior quality compared to Arabica. Some varieties of Robusta, however, are of high quality and valued for their deep flavor. Robusta is more easily available and sold across most coffee shops in India.Robusta beans are also easier to grow. They are less vulnerable to pests and weather conditions. They produce fruit much more quickly than the Arabica, which needs several years to come to maturity. The process for the latter is intense.
