There is something about sweet treats that makes us go weak in the knees. From decadent cakes and pies to traditional Indian delicacies that never grow old, a dessert lover will have a sweet tooth for all of them. And as the festive season is just around the corner, we can't help but think of all the sugar-rush that's going to come with truckloads of Indian sweets waiting for us. India is home to a host of delicious sugar delights that are prepared on various festivals. We might be swooning over creamy cheesecake or crispy waffle sometimes but our heart would still be stuck on oil-laden jalebis and syrupy gulab jamuns. But one Indian sweet that might not be as popular as the ladoos and the barfis is balushahi.

Balushahi looks like an Indian version of a glazed-doughnut that is eaten across the states of Bihar, Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh. Crisp from outside and super-soft and tender from the inside, balushahi has a little flaky texture, is made of stiff dough, fried in ghee or oil and dunked in sugar syrup. This delectable sweet also has a similar twin down south called 'badushah'. One can find balushahis across Indian sweet shops but you can also make it fresh at home with an easy recipe.

We have a super easy and quick recipe of balushahi by famous YouTube chef Manjula Jain on her channel 'Manjula's Kitchen'. She cooks balushahi or Indian buttermilk doughnuts by making small fried balls out of a dough, which is made using all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, unsalted butter and yogurt. The golden fried balls are then dunked in syrup of sugar, water and cardamom. These balushahis are served with a generous garnishing of pistachios. Prepare these decadent treats during the upcoming festive season of Navratri and Diwali to impress your guests.
