The concept of coexistence is being promoted in an innovative way in Delhi's first community café in Shahpur Jat. This new concept allows solo travellers to dine in with strangers if they wish to and split the bill, making it a fun way to connect with locals. One just needs to keep the butterfly-shaped wooden stand upright on their table to show that they are willing to share their food. One can even come here with friends or family to enjoy wholesome North Indian and Mughlai cuisine in a homely setting or to simply plop on the mattresses, bean bags or beds to relax while enjoying their favourite book from the mini library shelf. The South Delhi Kitchen is founded by three friends who believe that this idea will help real people to connect in the real world thus focusing on #unstrangeyourself. The clip board in the café allows you to put up slips saying "looking for" or "available as". These requirements can be as bizarre as looking for a book lover, available as a baby sitter etc.
The café provides a good range of food options to its customers, ranging from all-day menu to the mains. The most popular dish is Spaghetti Aglio Olio and it is made by the owner herself. The food is well cooked and scrumptious with affordable prices. The restaurant targets both youngsters and families, and believes that simplicity, quality and affordable pricing are what will be the selling points in the long run.

Roma Malhotra, the co-owner of the restaurant, tells us that she was guilty of wasting food as she used to order three to four dishes every time she went to a café but was rarely able to finish them. She feels that this concept would give the customer freedom to try variety of dishes along with being able to share the bill. "The pattern of division of bill completely depends on the customers and we do not interfere in this matter," she said.On asking one of the diners what he had to say about his experience, "It is an amazing concept. One can browse through books, munch on snacks, sip coffee as well as connect with new people. It's perfect."
