A cheese omelette is a common breakfast dish enjoyed by many. Both eggs and cheese are exceptionally rich in protein, but did you know that teaming the two may not be a healthy option for your morning meal? Your favourite cheese omelette or an egg and cheese sandwich may not be the best breakfast ideas – at least according to Ayurveda.
According to Ayurveda, there are certain food combinations that disturb the normal functioning of the gastric fire and upset the balance of doshas. These wrong combinations can cause indigestion and fermentation or rotting of foods that can cause stomach problems. One such incompatible food combination according to Dr. Vasant Lad’s ‘The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies’ is pairing eggs with cheese.(Also Read:  5 Ways In Which You Can Use Eggs To Lose Weight)

Ayurvedic expert Dr. Ashutosh Gautam explains, “Eggs should not be teamed with milk as milk in heavy in itself. Combining dairy products with eggs may make it difficult to digest and slow down the digestive processes. Both eggs and cheese are protein dense and protein takes the longest to digest. Delayed digestion can cause several tummy problems. The idea is to not pair two heavy foods together”.
He adds, “If you eat a heavy lunch after eating a breakfast with eggs and cheese, it can further aggravate the feeling of heaviness and drowsiness. However, the combination of eggs and cheese may be good for those who are into body building, as it fulfils their need for an extra boost of proteins, but they should also be working out accordingly.”
Healthy, wholesome and protein rich - there is absolutely no reason why you should eliminate eggs or cheese (unless it is the processed and fattening) from your overall diet. But it helps to be mindful when it comes to food combinations for a healthy gut and healthy digestion. So, the next time you decide to have them together, make sure you follow it up with a light lunch.
