Indian Railways has often faced the brunt of passengers being displeased with the food served. Sometimes quality becomes the issue and at other times contaminated food receives severe backlash. This time, it was neither. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), an elderly passenger was captured engaged in an altercation with the waiter on the Vande Bharat Express. It so happened, that the railway staff mistakenly served a non-vegetarian meal to the traveller, who was probably a vegetarian. In a fit of fury, the elderly person allegedly slapped the waiter twice. The incident occurred on July 26 when the train was traversing from Howrah to Ranchi. A fellow passenger might have recorded the live footage.

“Vande Bharat mistakenly served non-veg food to an old person. He didn't see instructions and ate the food. Being a vegetarian, he realised it tasted like non-veg, so he got furious and gave two tight slaps to the waiter,” read the note. In the video, the waiter was seen apologising for his mistake. The co-passengers intervened and supported him. One passenger hit the elderly man on the back of his head and demanded he apologise to the waiter. “Upar likha rehta hai (It is written on top)” he told the aged person angrily, indicating the labels that come with the food packaging determining whether the meal is veg or non-veg.
Social media users were quick to react to the video. “Why (do) people hate protein?” asked an individual.
Vehemently opposing the physical spat, a person commented, “You cannot take law in your own hand. Just because he is poor and cannot put up a fight.”
Condemning the actions of the aged person and the passenger who hit him, a user wrote, “The old man did wrong by slapping the waiter. The guy in the red t-shirt also did wrong by hitting the old man on the head and shoulder. Both should be punished.”
“Matlab padha bhi nahi kha bhi liya, aur uske upar itni bakwaas? (That means, he did not even read the label, ate the food and above that he is saying so much nonsense?)” slammed another.
Begging to differ, a critic wrote, “This ‘by mistake' has become a pattern. There have been many such cases on Domestic Airlines, Zomato, and Swiggy. This needs to be independently investigated and the guilty need to be punished.”
