The vegan diet is one of the most popular diets across the world. The plant-based diet cuts out all kinds of animal products such as meat, fish, chicken, eggs and dairy products. Given that animal products are known to be high in saturated fat and cholesterol, it is no surprise that veganism is catching on as it is known to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. However, if you are making a switch to veganism after being a hardcore non-vegetarian all your life, it can be extremely difficult to adjust to the diet in the beginning. But this has got less to do with your diet and more to do with you not wearing your experimental hat on. Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija shared the recipe for a vegan Bacon made using banana peels.

The vegan bacon was made with banana peels, similar to a viral hack which surfaced on Instagram recently.

According to celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija, all your favourite foods can be recreated just as easily in the vegan world. In her recent Instagram post, the celebrity fitness expert said, “Well, the vegan world has plant replacements for all our favourite foods!”

And she isn't talking about replacing paneer with tofu or chicken with soya chunks. She is, in fact, reaching out to all the bacon lovers with her latest video. She shared a recipe and said, “Here's how you can bring crispy bacon for your breakfast sandwiches.”

If you were wondering what she was replacing the bacon with, it is the old good banana peel. Before you scroll away in disbelief, take a look at the recipe to know how she had used the usually discarded peel to make this yummy snack.

  • Separate the peels from the flesh of the banana and scarp the peel off its flesh to make it crispier.
  • Mix soy sauce, smoked paprika powder, garlic powder, peri peri powder and maple syrup in a bowl
  • Marinate the peels in the mix.
  • Air fry or bake it in the oven for ten minutes at 180 Celsius.
  • If you are using an air fryer, flip the peels over, add some more sauce and fry for five more minutes.

Sharing the video, she explained that banana peel is edible and is also highly nutritious. She said that it was rich in antioxidants, potassium, fibres and other essential nutrients. “Healthy, good for your heart, super high in fibre. Using the banana peels not only tastes yum but also avoids plant wastes.”
