India's homegrown flavours are steadily finding their place on the global map. Several products from various regions of the country have gained recognition on the international platform. Adding to this growing list is Bihar's GI-tagged Mithila Makhana.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday announced that 18 metric tonnes of Mithila Makhana were exported from Bihar to Australia for the first time via sea route. The consignment was procured directly from farmers in Darbhanga, giving them nearly 18% higher returns compared to the prevailing market price.

"India's GI-tagged Mithila Makhana has achieved another major milestone in the global market. With the support of @APEDADOC, 18 metric tons of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana was exported for the first time from Bihar to Australia via sea route. This consignment, procured directly from farmers in Darbhanga, has provided them with nearly 18% more profit compared to the market price," Goyal said in a post on X.
According to the Bihar Agriculture Department, the consignment was packed across seven containers. It was flagged off by Bihar Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha from the Integrated Unit of Irradiation Cum Packhouse in Bihta, Patna.
As per ANI, the department described the shipment as a major boost for the state's agricultural exports, highlighting its role in connecting local farmers with international markets and advancing the shift from “Production to Export.” It noted that modern infrastructure for irradiation, quality testing, packaging and logistics is helping bring Bihar's agricultural produce in line with global standards.

The department added that the initiative, which has begun with Makhana, could pave the way for other agricultural products from Bihar to enter international markets. The latest export is part of broader efforts to strengthen the state's agri-export ecosystem through improved infrastructure, capacity building, quality compliance, market linkages and value addition.
