For most of us, ordering food is as simple as scrolling through a menu and picking what looks good. But according to Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, there are a few things consumers should keep in mind before placing that order. Speaking during a round-table discussion with NDTV Profit, Mundhe was asked what an alert and conscious citizen should look for while eating out or ordering food. Instead of focusing on regulations and legal jargon, he shared a few practical points that consumers can keep in mind to make safer food choices.

Here Are The 4 Things He Recommends:

1. Choose Food Wisely

Mundhe said consumers should generally avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS). While enjoying such foods occasionally is fine, he stressed that they should not become a regular part of one's diet.

2. Pay Attention To Cleanliness

The FDA Commissioner emphasised the importance of hygiene and sanitation at food establishments. Poor cleanliness can lead to cross-contamination, which in turn may increase the risk of food poisoning and other health issues.

3. Check If The Restaurant Has An FSSAI Licence

Another thing Mundhe suggested is checking whether the restaurant is registered or licensed. He noted that food businesses are required to prominently display their licence. While a licence alone does not guarantee compliance, it indicates that the establishment is operating within the regulatory framework.

4. Keep Age-Appropriate Diets In Mind

Mundhe also highlighted the importance of age-appropriate food choices. Nutritional needs can vary with age, and consumers should be mindful of choosing food that suits their health requirements and lifestyle.

During the discussion, he also stressed that food safety is not just the responsibility of regulators and food businesses. Consumers, too, need to stay aware and vigilant about the food they eat.

As more people rely on restaurants and food delivery platforms for their meals, Mundhe's simple checklist serves as a useful reminder: choose healthier options, look for good hygiene, verify licences and make informed dietary choices.
