A restaurant in Kyoto is breaking culinary boundaries by serving South Indian cuisine. The establishment, named ‘Tadka', was introduced by Prasanna Karthik, who served as a former advisor to Manohar Parrikar, a significant figure in Indian politics. “I visited this kick-ass South Indian restaurant called Tadka in Kyoto, Japan. Tadka is owned and run by Japanese people. They visit Chennai once every six months, learn new dishes, practice them to perfection, and add them to their menu,” Mr. Karthik wrote on X, previously Twitter.

He continued, “In Tadka, I had one of the best South Indian meals I've ever had, even after judging by the standards of my Chennai upbringing. The dosa and idli were unbelievably authentic.”

Karthik pointed out that Tadka is mostly frequented by Japanese customers, who have developed a strong liking for the food. This reflects the global appeal of Indian cuisine and its role in enhancing India's soft power.

He added, “In a country that uses chopsticks to eat food, Tadka actively promotes eating by hand.. in true south Indian style.”

Karthik also shared that the owners make it a point to journey to Tiruvanamalai, a temple town in Tamil Nadu, where they meditate at the Ashram of Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi, a renowned Advaita Vedanta teacher and jivan mukta. The influence of Ramana is evident, with his picture gracing the background of the restaurant.

“I don't have coffee or tea. But when I was leaving, they gave me a complimentary cup of south Indian filter coffee. Since I did not want to be rude, I accepted it. It turned out to be the best filter coffee I've ever had. These guys took Japanese precision to an all new level,” Karthik concluded.  People have given a shout out to “these guys for their unending quest for perfection.”
