On all busy weekdays, when we are all tuckered out to make a healthy meal for evening hunger, a quick-fix recipe is what we need for evening tea-time noshing. Sundal, a popular South Indian snack, is quick and easy to make, and is super healthy too. Made with a terrific combination of protein-rich legumes and lentils, sundal is just the fulsome recipe you were looking for all this time. The profuse tempering of different spices with urad and chana dal adds some exciting flavours to the snack and garnishing of grated coconut rounds it up perfectly.

Sundal can be made with any legume of your choice - kidney beans, chickpeas, green gram, black eyed peas and others. However, chickpeas (chane) are more commonly used to make it, hence; our recipe is of chana-dal sundal. This no onion, no garlic recipe is so filling and nutrient-rich, it can be paired with pooris or can be used as a side dish in Indian platters too.

Chana-Dal Sundal Recipe:

Ingredients -
1 cup chickpeas
1 tsp urad dal
1 tsp chana dal
8-10 curry leaves
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 Whole red chillies
A pinch of heeng (asafoetida)
Grated coconut for garnishing
Ghee (clarified butter) for cooking

Method -
Step 1 - Rinse chana four to five times and soak in sufficient water with some salt overnight or in the morning if making Sundal in the evening.
Step 2 - Drain the water and pressure cook the chana till they are cooked but firm. They should hold their round shape and be slightly crunchy, not mushy.
Step 3 - In a pan, heat ghee and add mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal, and let them fry till they change their colour.
Step 4 - Add curry leaves, whole red chillies and some salt, and fry them for a minute.
Step 5 - Add the cooked chickpeas, salt according to your taste and mix well.
Step 6 - Turn off the gas and garnish with grated coconut.

You just have to prepare in advance by soaking the chana beforehand. You can also cook them and store them, and just prepare the quick tempering when you want to serve this Sundal. So try this quick and easy South Indian snack recipe at home.
