Highlights

  • Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour.
  • Desi Indian mithai is the highlight of these festivities.
  • Here's how you can make halwai-style coconut malai barfi at home.

The auspicious festival of Raksha Bandhan is just around the corner. On this day, sisters tie a sacred thread called Rakhi on their brother's wrist as a symbol of love and protection. This year, the festival will be celebrated on August 30, 2023, and the preparations for it have already begun in full swing. Just like any other Indian festival, mithai is the highlight of Raksha Bandhan's festivities as well. However, there are times when we might forget to buy it in the midst of other preparations and rush to our local halwai shop only to realise that everything is already sold out. But should this dampen our festive spirit? Absolutely not! Instead, we make halwai-style mithai at home, and that too in just 10 minutes. Sounds too good to be true? Try this coconut malai barfi and surprise your siblings with some sweet goodness.

What Is Coconut Malai Barfi?

Coconut malai barfi is a traditional Indian dessert made using milk, malai, sugar, and fresh coconut. It is quite rich and decadent and offers a melt-in-the-mouth texture. Coconut helps add a distinct grainy texture to the barfi. Some recipes also use desiccated coconut and other flavouring agents such as saffron or cardamom, but to recreate the halwai-style flavours, it's best to stick to the basic four ingredients.

Can You Prepare Coconut Malai Barfi In Advance?

Are you wondering if you can prepare this barfi in advance? The answer is yes! You can make coconut malai barfi as early as one week prior to any special occasion or festival. It will still taste just as flavourful and fresh. However, make sure to store it properly in a sealed container, ensuring that the barfi pieces don't stick to each other.

How To Make Coconut Malai Barfi | Easy Coconut Malai Barfi Recipe

This recipe has been shared by food blogger Parul on her YouTube channel 'Cook With Parul'. To begin with the recipe, add milk and sugar to a kadhai. Boil on a low-medium flame until the sugar fully dissolves, stirring occasionally. Once done, add the shredded fresh coconut and mix well. Make sure not to include the brown part of the coconut in this, as this can affect the taste of the barfi. Keep mixing until the coconut absorbs all the milk, changes consistency, and becomes firm. Now, add some malai. You can also add ghee or fresh cream if you don't have malai. The mixture will become thick by now and take shape. Switch off the flame, grease a plate with ghee, and transfer the prepared barfi mixture to it. Level it gently using a spatula from the top and let it set for some time. Garnish with nuts of your choice and enjoy!
