Ever since we are young, we are taught that the human body is made up of blood, water and a dozen of atoms and biomolecules. Blood, is an essential body fluid that carries nutrients and oxygens to cells and transports metabolic wastes away from the cells. You would be surprised to know that your blood is made up of both liquids and solids. The liquid component of blood is called plasma, over half of your blood is plasma. The solid part of the blood comprises red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Now, a typical average adult possesses 5 liters of blood, women tend to have a lower blood volume as compared to men. We lose blood, time to time, for various reasons; and our body also has the ability to manufacture blood. Now, you may have heard of a certain diet or foods that help with increase of blood count, but how many of us are aware of foods that ensure proper blood flow? Many individuals may have adequate blood but suffer from poor blood flow which is often manifested by weakness, numbness and a tingling feeling. In long term it could also lead to nerve damage, tissue damage or stroke if necessary steps are not taken in time.
Here are some foods that are known to improve blood flow:
1. Beetroot
This deep-red vegetable is a treasure of antioxidants. The pigments responsible for its lovely colour could also benefit your overall health. When eaten raw, beetroot is known to improve circulation, purifying blood and strengthening liver. "A combination of iron and antioxidants helps feed and purify the blood while improving its oxygen uptake", notes the book 'Healing Foods' in one of its sections dedicated to beetroot.
2. Berries:
Blueberries, strawberries, mulberries, raspberries- the season is replete with sweet and sour berries and guess what? These berries are known to boost blood flow naturally too and do wonders for your heart health.
3. Pomegranate:
The juicy, sweet fruit is a very potent source of polyphenol antioxidants and nitrates that are considered to be incredible vasodilators (substances that help dilate blood vessels for smooth blood flow). You can toss pomegranate seeds in salads or juice them.
4. Garlic
If you cannot imagine a meal without that pungent kick of garlic then here's good news. This healing spice could do wonders to increase blood circulation. "Garlic is universally recognized for its health-promoting benefits: aiding the circulatory and digestive systems, boosting the immune system, lowering blood pressure, and fighting heart disease", writes the book 'Healing Foods' by DK Publishing House.
5. Cinnamon
In many animal studies cinnamon has shown its efficacy as a warming spice that could help blood flow by improving blood vessel dilation. If the vessels are dilated enough, it won't obstruct blood flow.
Include these foods in your diet for all benefits. If you happen to be on medications make sure you do not skip your dose.
