Portion control is said to be one of the most effective ways to enjoy our favourite food without piling up excess calories. The idea is that we eat small portions of everything, rather than giving up food groups entirely. We must be mindful of exactly how much of each food we are taking in as per this approach. Further, we can also treat our tastebuds to something delicious while avoiding unnecessary calories. However, this is easier said than done. It often becomes a tedious task to decide upon the exact portions of how much food should be eaten in every meal and to prevent overeating and bingeing. Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar weighed in on this and shared her thoughts about how portion control should be practised in the right manner, that is, intuitively. Take a look:

"Why you shouldn't portion control," wrote the celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar in the caption of the video. In the clip, she explained why portion control could actually get quite complicated for people who were on a diet. "Portion Control was invented by people who wanted us to be constantly conflicted and confused," said Rujuta Diwekar in the video. She said that there were many factors that affected our appetite at a given point and it would be difficult to regulate portion size every time. This includes stress, exercise, reason for eating, the time of the day and the company we had.

What celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar suggested instead was using a four S approach to figure out how much one should eat in every meal.

  1. Sit - Firstly, one should sit down and eat always. It is not a good idea to eat standing up.
  2. Senses - It is important to use all the senses in the process of eating so that we are mindful of what we eat as the second tip to control appetite and overeating.
  3. Slow - It is a good idea to chew food properly and eat as slowly as possible so that the feeling of fullness comes quickly after the meal.
  4. Solitude - Lastly, Rujuta Diwekar suggested that it was a good idea to eat at least one meal a week in complete solitude.
