Aangan By Chef Rohit Ghai: A Culinary Gem at Shangri-La Al Husn, Muscat

Shangri-La Al Husn, Muscat, has unveiled Aangan, a contemporary Indian restaurant with Chef Rohit Ghai at the helm, promising an unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant is making waves, particularly among Indian diners, thanks to its thoughtfully crafted menu. Inspired by the concept of an 'aangan' or courtyard, where Indian families gather for communal meals, Aangan recreates this warm ambience by the shores of Oman. Chef Rohit Ghai shares his vision, saying, "Indian cuisine is rich and steeped in tradition. At Aangan, I aim to present it in a fresh light, using locally sourced ingredients, authentic Indian spices, and innovative techniques. We welcome guests from India and around the world."

Meet the Chef

Chef Rohit Ghai, globally recognized for his culinary finesse, played a pivotal role in Jamavar, a London restaurant, achieving a Michelin Star within a year. His passion for showcasing Indian cuisine earned him the distinction of being the first Indian chef to achieve this honour in the UK. Chef Rohit's culinary journey began in his mother's kitchen in Punjab. He honed his skills in some of the world's finest restaurants, including Gymkhana, Hoppers, Trishna, Verandah in Copenhagen, Benares in Mayfair, Kutirn, and Manthan. He recently authored "Tarkari," a tribute to his parents' food, featuring both classic and lesser-known Indian recipes.

The Menu

Aangan's menu, crafted by Chef Rohit, offers a contemporary twist on Indian cuisine. His signature dish, the batter-fried masala prawn, showcases the flavours of Kashmiri chilli, sesame, peanut, and tamarind, topped with a hint of desiccated coconut. The slow-cooked lamb shank, known as rogan josh, is accompanied by sauteed onions, green and Kashmiri chilli, and a medley of Indian spices and herbs. Even the humble aloo tikki gets a makeover with honey yogurt, tangy tamarind, lentils, and fresh mint. A surprising twist comes with dhokla featuring fresh apples and tempered baby heritage beetroot. The dessert menu includes mango cheesecake with green pistachio and a touch of pink peppercorns. Aangan also offers an extensive beverage menu, including the must-try Gin and tonic Pushpanjali.

The Decor

Aangan, opened on October 25th, boasts an alfresco terrace with stunning views of the Gulf of Oman. The interior seamlessly blends Indian and Omani cultures, with high ceilings, graceful archways, blue drapes, subtle furnishings, and elegant cutlery. As guests step through the grand double doors, they are transported to a regal setting.

René D. Egle, Area General Manager of Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa and Shangri-La Al Husn Resort & Spa, expresses excitement about this new addition, saying, "Collaborating with Chef Rohit Ghai for Aangan was an easy decision. Aangan enriches our portfolio of premium restaurants at Shangri-La Al Husn, and we are thrilled to introduce it to our guests and the Muscat community. Our dedicated team is committed to crafting memorable experiences, and Aangan's aromatic spices and unique dishes promise a one-of-a-kind dining adventure."
