The new ruling on Goods and Service Tax (GST) released on Monday has caused quite a stir on social media. The Ministry stated that there would be a five percent additional tax on packaged items such as milk, butter and paneer. Twitter users lamented that their favourite cottage cheese dishes would now become more expensive. They took to the micro-blogging platform to share their thoughts about this new GST ruling through a flurry of memes. Paneer butter masala - a popular recipe among paneer-lovers - featured in many of the memes and found itself among the top trends on Twitter India.

Twitter users said that the much-loved paneer butter masala would now be out of their budget thanks to the new GST ruling. "Paneer Butter Masala should be free from GST as it comes in plate and not in packing," protested one user on Twitter. Others questioned how exactly the tax on Paneer Butter Masala would be calculated, "If you order it at a restaurant, it will still be 5%. But if you want to calculate the GST paid if you are making at home then data is insufficient!"

Even Congress MP Shashi Tharoor chimed in with his own joke on paneer butter masala. He took to Twitter to a picture of a hilarious meme that he apparently received on WhatsApp. The image illustrated how all elements of the dish had different rates of GST applicable to them. While paneer and masala were taxed at 5%, butter came under the 12% slab. The joke posed a maths question, asking people to calculate the GST on paneer butter masala. Take a look at Tharoor's tweet:
