Diabetes has become a global issue over time with more and more people being on the risk of it, either due to genes or simply the lifestyle. Over 50 million people are already grappling with this chronic disease in India alone. The biggest reason of the increasing cases is, however, the unavailability of its cure. A condition characterised by fluctuating blood sugar levels, diabetes can only be managed with a balanced diet and lifestyle. Experts have suggested to have healthy snacking at regular intervals, foods to have and avoid, regular exercise and much more - all of this together can work towards managing the blood sugar levels.
If you think of an Indian diet, the picture is always of greasy curries, parathas and rotis but like any other cuisine, this too can be tweaked to suit a diabetes diet with certain smart food choices. As per health experts, vegetables like carrot (gajar) and methi can be beneficial in managing diabetes as they are packed with essential nutrients. Winter favourite methi (fenugreek) is the perfect fix for a fibre-rich meal which keeps us full for long and maintain blood sugar levels. As per various studies, besides fibre, methi is known for 4HO-Ile, an unusual amino acid which is found only in fenugreek and has possible anti-diabetic qualities such as enhancing insulin secretion and increasing insulin sensitivity. Carrot, on the other hand, is another winter staple that too is rich in fibre and ensures that your blood sugar levels are steady. Besides, carrots are also low on calories which are considered beneficial for diabetics.
