How Much Tea or Coffee Is Safe?

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), both tea and coffee contain caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system and can lead to dependency. The recommended daily limit is no more than 300 milligrams of caffeine. A 150 ml cup of brewed coffee has 80-120 mg of caffeine, instant coffee contains 50-65 mg, and tea has 30-65 mg.

When Should You Avoid Tea or Coffee?

Ayurvedic expert Dr Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya recently shared insights on Instagram about when to steer clear of tea and coffee. Here are three crucial times to avoid these beverages:

1. First Thing in the Morning

While many start their day with a hot cup of tea or coffee to wake up, Dr Savaliya advises against this. Consuming caffeine on an empty stomach can disrupt cortisol production, the primary stress hormone, leaving you feeling anxious and off-balance before the day even begins.

2. With Meals

Do you enjoy your tea or coffee with a meal or snack? It's time to rethink that habit. Both tea and coffee are acidic and can hinder digestion. When you consume protein with tea, the acidity can harden the protein, making it harder to digest. Additionally, tea can interfere with iron absorption if consumed right after a meal. To optimise digestion and nutrient uptake, avoid tea and coffee at least an hour before and after eating.

3. After 4:00 P.M.

For those who enjoy an evening cup, be aware that caffeine can impact your overall health. Dr. Savaliya recommends avoiding caffeine at least 10 hours before bedtime, and preferably 6 hours before. Steering clear of caffeine after 4 p.m. can enhance your sleep quality, support liver detoxification, reduce cortisol levels, and promote better digestion.
