A thick liquid sweetener which is golden in color and honey like with a rich flavor, golden syrup is very popular in European desserts. It is made by refining sugar cane and used as an alternative to honey. Since it has a heavy sweet flavor, it should be used in lesser amounts. It can also be used in the place of corn syrup. Golden syrup is sometimes referred to as light treacle and can be used as maple syrup. It should always be stored at room temperature.
It is very popularly used in desserts, frosting, pancakes, jams, jellies, candy, cookies, rice crispies, caramel snacks, ice creams, sorbets etc. It is also used to make cakes, chocolates, fudges and treacle tarts.
Due to its high sugar content, it is not advisable for people with diabetes, hypertension and other such conditions. An alternative to golden syrup made using sugar syrup and water is better for the diet.
