The father's role is often in the background, a silent backbone in his children's life. Father's day is a wonderful festival that recognizes and values the worth of this support. The father figure has always been held as next to god, more so in the Indian culture where his words are law. Oddly, an official recognition of this fact was missing around the world until the last century! Unofficially father's day dates back to 4,000 years ago when archaeologists discovered a carved message in Babylon from a son named Elmesu wishing his father a good life. Officially, the ball was rolled by Ms. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. A sermon on Mother's day in 1909 got the wheels churning in her head to provide recognition for her father, a civil war veteran, who raised six children all by himself. It made her question the absence of a special day to pay tribute to fathers. Though the idea was ridiculed by locals and newspapers alike, constant lobbying for the cause showed success with the celebration of the first Father's day on June 19, 1910. The honorable idea became so popular in the U.S. that it was approved as a festival in 1916, and established as a national holiday by President Nixon in 1972, to be observed on the third Sunday of June.
