Peanuts, also known as groundnuts are a nutritious legume found all over the world. They are said to have originated in South America. They can be used for direct consumption, in food preparations, for deriving oil, making peanut flour or in the preparation of peanut butter.

Types and Usage
There are many types of peanuts that are grown. But the most common cultivar are Spanish, Runner, Virginia, Valencia and Tenesse. Their use varies depending on the size and oil content. Commercial peanuts that are commonly found in shells are of the Virginia type and the Spanish peanuts are the ones that are preferred for peanut butter, as salted nuts or for candies. Peanuts are a very common snack when they are consumed without thier shells. Peanut flour is sometimes used as it has a high protein content.
Health benefits
1. Peanuts are a very good source of monounsaturated fats and help in reducing the risk of various cardiovascular diseases.
2. Peanuts are a good sources of vitamin E, niacin, folate, protein and manganese, all of which are essential for a healthy heart.
3. High concentration of polyphenol in peanuts makes it a powerful antioxidant and helps against the damages caused by free radicals.
4. It contains niacin or vitamin B3 that is helpful in preventing Alzheimer's and other age related problems.
Note: Peanut is often called the controversial food because many people have shown allergic reactions to it. Even though it has various health benefits, it has shown inflammation related allergies in some people. Therefore its consumption is advised with care.
