Pressed Rice(चिड़वा)

Pressed or flattened rice is dehusked rice pressed into dry flakes that swell when added to liquid. They are most popularly consumed as a snack item and great for a sudden hunger pang. Pressed rice is most commonly used in Nepal, India and Bangladesh. These rice flakes carry no special aroma and have a gentle taste. The thickness of the rice flakes depends on the pressure applied during the flattening process. In India, it is popularly known as Poha.


Flattened rice can be eaten raw or by immersing in water or milk and adding sugar, or can be fried and made into delicious snacks. It is a common breakfast item in Maharashtra and Madya Pradesh. Pressed rice is also popularly prepared with cooked potatoes, garnished with lime juice and grated coconut.

Nutritional Value

Pressed rice does not contain cholesterol and saturated fats. The sodium content is very also relatively low. It is rich in carbohydrates and is therefore a very good energizer as a breakfast item.
