If you've ever visited a traditional South Indian restaurant, you'll know that food is always served on plates made from banana leaves. These leafy plates have been used since many years as they are considered more expendable and sterile than wooden utensils. Additionally, consuming hot food on banana leaves can enhance the nutritional value of the meal. But do you know how banana leaf plates are made? Recently, a video demonstrating the manufacturing process of these plates went viral on Instagram. The clip has intrigued viewers from all quarters.
The video begins with a man placing a circular steel plate on a banana leaf and using a sharp object to cut the leaf into a round plate shape. For square-shaped plates, the stems and edges are trimmed off. The plates are then tied with a long strip from the banana stem and wrapped in newspaper before being bundled. Since being shared, the video has amassed over 27.7 million views. People flooded the comments sections with their reactions. “Circle plate nahi bhi hoti toh bhi kha lete hum khaana (Even if the plates were not cut into a circle, I would have eaten from them)” admitted a foodie. Heaping praise on the process an individual said, “What a vision, what a thought.” “Trust me they taste different,” guaranteed a person.

Citing the benefits of these naturally-made plates, someone else wrote, “Banana leaves are a great source of organic matter.” A user called the leafy plates, “Better than plastic plates” “It's very healthy and reflects our culture,” agreed another. A concerned critic commented, “Using in normal shape is better it produces lots of waste.”
