Nombu Kanji Recipe:A comforting porridge-like dish from Tamil Nadu that is popularly made during Ramadan to break the fast. Wholesome, nutritious, quick and easy!

Ingredients of Nombu Kanji

  • 1 Cup raw rice (blanched)
  • 1 cup moong dal (soaked)
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup carrot, chopped
  • 1/2 cup tomato, chopped
  • 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 Green chilli (slit)
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick
  • 3 Clove
  • 2 Cardamom
  • 3 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds

How to Make Nombu Kanji

  • 1.Grind raw rice and moong dal to a coarse mixture.
  • 2.Heat oil in a pan and add fenugreek seeds, clove, cardamom, cinnamon, chillies along with onion and ginger-garlic paste. Saute well.
  • 3.Now add tomato and carrot along with turmeric powder, garam masala powder and required salt. Saute until mushy and add raw rice moong dal mixture.
  • 4.Add water and a bit of coconut milk, pressure cook until mushy. Open and mash well.
  • 5.Mix well, if thick then add a bit more of coconut milk. Stir well. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve warm.
