'The Jeeves author breakfasted on tea, toast and a slice of coffee cake, while reading what he called a "breakfast book"'.
Every morning, Jeeves author PG Wodehouse breakfasted on tea, toast and a slice of coffee cake, while reading what he called a "breakfast book", often a mystery novel.
To make one cake
Heat the oven to 160C/320F/gas mark 3.5. Beat 225g soft unsalted butter and 225g soft brown sugar until creamy. Add four beaten eggs one by one, then sift in 225g plain flour and three teaspoons baking powder, and fold in. Add 100g walnut pieces, bashed with a rolling pin until a mixture of chunky and fine, and three tablespoons of strong coffee. Grease two 21cm cake tins, divide the mix between them and spread out level. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until risen, golden-brown and springy to the touch. Cool for 15 minutes, then turn out. Once cool, sandwich and top with buttercream icing (150g butter, two tablespoons strong coffee and 150g icing sugar, beaten). Decorate with extra walnuts.
