Ingredients of Amritsari Sookhi Dal

  • 1 Cup urad dal
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

How to Make Amritsari Sookhi Dal

Rinse the lentils thoroughly and pressure cook them with three cups of water until soft and mushy.

In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee over medium heat.

Add cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.

Add finely chopped onions and green chilies. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.

Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook for a minute to let the spices release their flavours.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.

Drain the cooked dal and add it to the pan.

Allow the dal to simmer for 5 minutes on low heat, letting the flavours meld together. Add salt to taste.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and lemon juice. Your Amritsari Sookhi Dal is ready to be served!
