A wearable device designed by an ENT surgeon in Kerala is expected to treat sleep apnea and snoring by changing the habit of sleeping on the back to sleeping on the side. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is one of the main causes for snoring.
The wearable device -- named 'Sleep on Side' made by surgeon R.S. Rejith -- is more of a clothing accessory with a ball stitched at the centre. It can be worn across the body, with the ball on the backside.
Apnea means a period of cessation or inability to breathe for more than 10 seconds, said Rejith.
"'Sleep on Side' can be worn across the body so that the ball is at the centre back of the body. It is helpful for sleep position modification, changing the habit of sleeping on the back to sleeping on the side," the surgeon said. There are already many anti-snoring devices available in the market to check snoring and treat the condition. These include chin straps, other wearables and devices.
