India is a land of diversity. The country has a rich and varied culture and food is an integral part of it. People often take time to learn about the different cultures, the festivals as well as the varied cuisines. However, the struggle only intensifies when you are trying to explain it to your friends in a foreign land. Students or working professionals who stay away from their country tend to celebrate their festivals in some way or the other. But, explaining the same to your friends from abroad could be quite a task. Something similar happened with an Indian woman, who goes by the name of whiskeyblues on Twitter. The user shared a screenshot of her WhatsApp chat, where she had a hard time explaining to her “white friends” that Pongal is a harvest festival and not a musical fest.

Pongal is one of the major festivals celebrated in Tamil Nadu. The chat opens with the Twitterati sending a text to one of her friends reading, “14th is the Pongal festival” Her friend asked, “Who is the headliner? Indian?” Confused at his question, the girl explained that “it's a Tamil harvest festival.” “I thought it was like Coachella. Usually, big festivals have headliners,” her friend reacted. “Honey no, you are cracking me up,” she stated with a bunch of laughing emojis. PS: Coachella is a music and arts festival, which is held every year at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in the Coachella Valley of the Colorado Desert. “When I try to explain Indian festivals to my white friends,” she captioned the tweet with crying emojis.

Pongal is linked with crop harvesting. This year, the four-day-long celebration commenced on January 15 and will conclude by January 18. On the other hand, in northern India, this celebration is known as Makar Sankranti.
