Recently, an X user (@Kannan__TS) took to the platform to share a comparison between a restaurant's bill and the prices of the same order on Zomato. The post has received 1 million views so far and has left the Internet abuzz. In the photo, a phone shows the Zomato prices beside the restaurant's regular paper bill. The picture is captioned, "My uncle ordered food from Murugan idli shop. See the price difference between @zomato and actual. As per the photo, six pieces of idli cost Rs 132 at the restaurant, while Zomato charged Rs 198 for the same. Two pieces of ghee podi idli were priced at Rs 88 at the establishment, but Rs 132 on the food delivery app.

Similar differences in cost were observed in the case of other items too. Chettinad Masala Dosa was priced at Rs 260 on Zomato, compared to Rs 171 at the restaurant. Several X users reacted to the viral post and pointed out that the higher prices are simply a reflection of the "convenience" of the service provided by the food delivery app. Others reacted differently. Check out some of the comments below:

The price of comfort and convenience.— dr_vee (@dr_vee95) July 17, 2024
I do not think it's too much of a difference for the Convenience. Incase the restaurant has free delivery you can order from them— Punita Toraskar (@impuni) July 17, 2024
Yes, there will be difference.
- Zomato charges 30% in every purchase from restaurant.
- Zomato doesn't give any offer, all offers are given by restaurant.
- To get restaurant visible to customers, Zomato charges additional as ads charges.
So restaurant price varies.— Pugalventhan Venkatesan (@pugalventhan_91) July 17, 2024
Everyone knows it.
But no one wants to get out of their home, go to the restaurant, order food, wait for the food to be cooked & then take it home.— aashish sutar (@aashish_sutar) July 17, 2024
This is nothing... You can see huge difference in many cases... Have seen a case 50% more on Bills... Commission, Delivery charges.. GST on that... GST mela GST... 😂— Aravind Bala (@aravindbal) July 16, 2024
Quite normal for pricing on food delivery platforms.. needs to be that way so the restaurant gets something (they would be playing fees to the platform)… In Australia, Uber Eats takes around 30% per order from the restaurant. So, unless there is a markup, the restaurant loses!— Sriram (彬彬), MBA MA BTECHIT (@svmbaekohau) July 17, 2024
